Cultural immune system

Inspiration

The title and the quotations used in this project come from two books written by Robert M. Pirsig : Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and Lila : An Inquiry Into Morals.

For Pirsig, the prevailing view in our society is the scientific paradigm. This cultural perspective on the reality would work exactly like the immune biological system : it would systematically reject any other way of comprehending the reality, judged dangerous for its surviving. Pirsig calls the phenomenon The cultural immune system. True, the mental is a powerful tool to get a clearer understanding of the reality we live in, but it's not the only one. That's what this project is about.

Insane Spaces

Inspiration

This series is build around the architectural design of Frank Gehry, more specifically the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao. My intention here is not to represent an accurate image of the building, but to propose a distorted reality of the environment it creates. In order to do that, I chose to turn to the same tools as Gehry, that is the deconstruction of surfaces, the eclecticism of forms and colors, the saturation of lighting effects and reflections which made the particularity of Gehry's creations.

According to the adopted point of view, time and space are either one concept or two.

The concept of time can be presented as a dynamic process or as three occurrences on a continuum. As a dynamic process, time is to be understood as the direct experience of what happens in a particular place at a particular moment. From a linear point of view, time is rather categorized in past, present and future, and becomes independent from the here and now. Beyond the concept, the vision of time we embrace determines our relation to the world.

Sin City

Inspiration

A pretext to mezzotint

Miller's comics series, inspired by the after war crime novels, take place in Sin City, a megalopolis consumed by the decay of the social order.

Miller's minimal aesthetics is based on high contrasts between black and white, shadows and light and, here and now, a parsimonious use of bright color touches in order to picture a feeling or evoke a sensation. The trash aesthetics of Sin City made of harsh contrasts and dramatic effects constitutes a pretext to explore the juxtaposition of 3 technical approaches : etching, mezzotint and chine-collé.
